Central Football Officials
Frank P. Scelza comes as close to a living legend
in the Hartford-area sports world as there is anywhere.
A graduate of Bulkeley High School, where
he captained the football and basketball teams
(Class of '44), he graduated from Springfield
College in 1952. Earning advanced degrees from
the University of Hartford. A lifetime educator, Scelza
was a coach or assistant coach in baseball, golf,
basketball and football at Weaver and Bulkeley
high schools. He retired as a vice-principal from
Bulkeley in 1989. He joined the CCAFO and worked for that association
for 31 years before retiring in 1989. During
that time he was elected president. He was also a
member of the New England Small College Football
Officials, headed by the legendary Sumner Dole,
before that group was folded into the ECAC and
Eastern
Association of
Intercollegiate
Football
Officials.
A person
known for attention
to detail,
Scelza was
meticulous in his pre-game conference, making sure
every official knew in detail what was expected of
him. Scelza was honored by many
organizations including: lifetime member of the
Wampanoag CC, Coach of the Year in the
Connecticut Small College Conference, Leadership
Award with the Hartford Chapter National Football
Foundation and Hall of Fame.
